Our Mission
York Medic Tutors was founded by Amal and Ken, two medical students at Hull York Medical School who are studying in York. While we have “Medic” in the name, the vision for our service is to include teaching for all Sciences and Maths. After all, our team is united by two things: our passion for teaching and our love of all things STEM!
Our mission is to make high-quality tutoring and medical admissions support accessible, affordable and inspiring. We aim to connect students with knowledgeable, passionate tutors who build confidence, encourage curiosity and help every learner achieve their academic potential through personalised support and exceptional teaching.
Our Reviews

“Tutor Ken has been a fantastic resource for improving my child’s understanding of secondary school mathematics. The tutor’s explanations are clear and tailored to my son’s learning pace, ensuring complex concepts are broken down into manageable steps. Since starting tutoring, I’ve noticed significant improvements in test results/confidence in maths. I would highly recommend Ken to anyone seeking to strengthen their maths skills.”
– Ioana, mum of Maths student

“My Daughter is really enjoying and benefitting from her GCSE maths tutoring with Amal. She finds Amal easy to get along with, patient, good at explaining in a way she understands and Amal can approach topics in a different way if still needed. It’s really nice to see my daughter not dreading her maths lessons and feeling more confident. Amal’s communication with us has been fantastic; very clear, prompt, helpful and friendly.”

FAQs
What can I expect from tutoring with York Medic Tutors?
Our tutors are all university students who remember what it’s like to study for GCSEs, A-levels and university admissions. This means they can relate to students, build confidence and tailor their teaching to each individual’s learning style.
Lessons are designed around each student’s goals, whether that’s strengthening subject knowledge, reviewing homework, improving study skills, preparing for exams or getting ahead in class.
Tutors monitor progress throughout and provide lesson notes after every session, including:
- A summary of what was covered
- What the student did well
- Areas for improvement and next steps
They also regularly use past exam questions to reinforce learning, provide feedback and help students measure their progress over time.
How do online lessons work?
All lessons take place online via video call, usually using Google Meet. Students join through a private link shared by their tutor.
Tutors often use OneNote to create a digital notebook where lesson notes, homework, revision resources and practice questions are stored. This gives students ongoing access to everything covered during their tutoring sessions.
Who are your tutors and how are students matched?
York Medic Tutors was founded by Amal and Ken, who are also experienced tutors themselves.
Our wider tutoring team consists of university students studying a range of STEM subjects. Every tutor is selected for their academic ability, communication skills and enthusiasm for teaching.
Each tutor has their own teaching style, and we carefully match students with someone who best suits their academic goals and personality.
Visit our Our Tutors page to learn more about the team.
How are lessons arranged, and can the schedule be flexible?
Lessons are arranged directly between students and their tutor. We generally recommend one hour per week at a regular time, although lesson frequency can be adapted to suit your schedule.
Students are welcome to pause tutoring, rearrange sessions where needed, or book additional lessons during revision and exam periods. As our tutors are also university students, availability may vary during university exam seasons. If you know you’ll need extra flexibility, let us know and we’ll match you with a tutor whose availability fits your requirements.
Please visit ‘Our Tutors’ page to get to know them all.
How do you support parents and work alongside schools?
Although York Medic Tutors operates independently from schools, our tutors aim to complement classroom learning. They can tailor lessons around a student’s exam board, syllabus, revision timetable, mock exams and school assessments.
Parents can monitor progress through shared lesson notes, which include summaries, strengths, areas for development and recommended next steps. Parents are also welcome to contact tutors directly to discuss their child’s progress, and Amal and Ken are always available to answer any questions.
How do payments, cancellations and invoices work?
Tutors keep a record of each lesson, and York Medic Tutors sends an invoice detailing the lessons completed, topics covered and the total amount due. Payments are due within seven days of the invoice date.
If you need to cancel a lesson, we ask that you give as much notice as possible. Lessons cancelled at least 24 hours in advance can be rearranged without charge. We also understand that unexpected circumstances, such as illness, can arise and will always try to be as accommodating as possible.
Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for full details of our payment and cancellation policies.
Can students or parents contact tutors between lessons?
Absolutely. Students and parents are encouraged to stay in touch with tutors via email, text or WhatsApp.
Students are welcome to ask questions about homework or topics they’ve found challenging, while parents can contact tutors regarding progress or upcoming lessons. Although tutors manage their own lesson planning and communication, Amal and Ken are always available should you need any additional support.
Can I reserve a tutor for a future start date?
Yes. If you don’t need tutoring straight away, you’re welcome to reserve a place with us. Simply get in touch through our contact form, and Amal or Ken will respond within 24 hours to discuss your requirements.
